Seller Beware

We've all seen the 20/20 episodes where poor little old ladies are swindled out thousands of dollars by some scam or another. Poor little old ladies, so sweet, so innocent. If only they knew better or had some internet savvy, maybe they would still have their retirement fund and their dignity, but alas, they're not very adept at the this new fangled thing we call the internet and they don't see the scams coming like we would. WE could smell a scam from a thousand miles away, right?

Wrong to the his-ong my friends.

Ya'll remember Zoe, right?

Bucked me off and broke my back? Remember? poor, Zoe, I'm not painting a fair picture of her. She's the sweetest tempered girl I've ever had, she was having a spazzy day and other than that one teensy episode she's been a great horse. Due to little Bebe' Torrie arriving in March, I put Zoe up for sale on this site and have had some bites and even people out to look at her, but she's still around; and I can't say that I'm not relieved she hasn't sold; it was a hard decision to put her up for sale. I don't know how much time I'll have for her next summer and she's too nice of a horse to stand around in a field.

I got an email from a guy asking about her. His bottom line was wanting to know what my bottom line for her was...okay, i guess that's pretty gutsy, but men are into bottom lines right? I told him what it was and he promptley responded saying that he would take her (AHHHHH, major second thoughts on selling her!) and wanted my name, address, and phone number to arrange the shipping. NO bank account, NO credit card number, NADA thing like that. There were some moments when I thought that the situation was a little strange. For example:
1. He was in the UK and was going to have some pick her up
2. He had a business deal going on in the States and wanted to send me a bank draft for TWICE what I was asking for Zoe. I would cash it and give the remaining amount to his shipper...okay a little weird, but still no money of mine is being used here.
3. He once referred to Zoe as the "vehicle" which REALLY made me think his email had been cut and pasted.
Oh, and 4. He was in a hurry, "let me know right away"

SO, what does someone do when faced with a horse crisis? You call your other crazy horse friend and hash out all the details. Rationalization for the strange deal:
1. HORSE PEOPLE ARE NUTS! (myself included)
2. Maybe he has lots of money?
3. Zoe is so gorgeous and well accomplished who wouldn't pay to have her shipped to the UK??

After some digging Crazy Horse Friend came up with this article on bank draft fraud. I forwarded it to my con artist friend, told him I was on to his little scam and have never heard back.

Word to the wise...internet fraud is real. I could have lost a whole lotta sweet moolah and my horse to boot!

Holli, I'm glad you were on to the
guy, what a scare! I guess there are people out there who will try
anything just to see if it will
work! I'm glad Zoe is still part of
your growing family,love, Mom

That is crazy...you could have been on 20/20. I am so glad you didn't fall for that, what a nut job. You are so smart, even with raging hormones!

woah, hol! this is scary, but also kind of funny when you think about it. i mean, you're trying to sell a horse on the Internet and a guy tries to scam you. the humor in those details is unescapable. And, I would beg to differ about sweet zoe's temperment - if you do recall me bouncing across the yard on her, totally out of control yelling, "shit!"

Holli, that is so weird because the SAME thing happened to my mom. She was selling a big item on Craig's list and some guy from the UK wanted to pay her more then what it was and have her give the remaining amount to the picker-upper. My mom googled it and apparently it's a common scam that goes on. I'm glad you didn't give in!

that is so scary...it's one thing to read about those things, but it's another to realize that you were a target of one. So glad you did your homework - I'd never heard of that one before so now I know.
